So I was watching this video and realized really how important it was for kids to stay in school. In New Britain , Ct there is a proceeding law that will fine any kid that skips school , and the cost is 75 dollars . Is this fair ? In the video one man said that some parents don't even have a car , how do they expect them to afford 75 dollars every time their child skips , that's insane right ?
Actually No , it is not insane. So many kids think they can practically do whatever they want , smoking , drinking and skip school. These kids actually skip school to do these illegal things. In the video people were complaining about kids who skip school going on their property, wandering around, and littering here and there. Is that fair to the community. Shouldn't something be done? I believe that maybe this fining will get the kids to actually obey the rule of going to school everyday. And yes I know that the kid doesn't pay the bill the parent does, but I think after awhile the parent will get so fed up in handing out 75 dollars time after time and become more stern in discipline. Parents might start actually dropping off the student at school or even call the school to see if the child has arrived. This might sound like babysitting but sometimes things have to be done to get the job done.
Anyways, all I am really trying to say is; to many kids are wasting their education and skipping school to do non sense. I honestly feel that it was a brilliant idea for Bristol, Ct to promote such punishment; it will grab the parents attention immediately and then will start to make the parents steer the child in the right way.
Maybe if this law comes down to New haven we will have a change in attendance , Do you think so ?
Very relevant topic Grabriska! I wonder how often CT towns/schools are on CNN. Nice find. You also did a good job of summarizing both sides of the issue and thinking about how this policy affects people. That's politics! The interaction between policy and people. Looking forward to the work!
ReplyDeleteI think this a very interesting topic that you've brought forward. Your question definitely gets me thinking. What first came to mind was, I believe, was a test that I had taken in class where we wrote about attendance incentives and how students can be bribed to attend school. Some examples I found are as follows:
ReplyDelete“Positive comment to child from teacher about their good attendance”
2. A note home to parents in Student Agenda Book
3. Extra time at the computer or PE
4."Free" homework pass
5. Lines up first for lunch or at class dismissal
6. Submit student's name to school morning show for special recognition throughout school
7. Cookie coupon
8. Pencils, pens, stickers, posters, book covers, book marks, etc.
9. Team certificate
10. Name on the "Attendance Wall" in the classroom
To get to the point, I see this as sort of growing from attendance incentives, under the same category and its somewhat extreme as how far it would go to result in a fine.
Wow, I can just picture this conflict on a five paragraph essay assignment! I do agree with the punishment for the skipping students. Students should be taking advantage of their education to become successful and to reach their dreams! Doors will open to anyone that steps up to the plate and has integrity and gratitude toward their faith to move forward! Why can't some students comprehend that? Having the law in New Haven would definitely create a better attendance record for our schools. It can make a difference! Change is good, isn't it? Think about it, it's similar to the rule at school. If you don't where your uniform, you don't enter the school building. Therefore, the rule is enforcing the students to wear their uniform. Great job with this blog!
ReplyDeleteI agree, this fine for skipping class will really open the parents' eyes because it is part their fault for their child skipping class. If they were to discipline their child at all times when necessary, their child wouldn't be out roaming the streets aimlessly. Now parents will give their child the discipline they need to finish school. Parents would start caring about their children's education and get more involved in their lives because they know they don't want to be paying $75 daily. If this fine were to come to new haven it would certainly help attendance. Parents would become involved in their child's life. Hopefully the student would realize on his own and would start to go to school instead of follow friends. However with this fine would an unexcused absence be considered skipping school?
